about

I learned to play Willowy Blonde after listening to the song's writer, Don Taylor, play it at musical gatherings in Austin in the mid-to-late 90's. With Don's blessings, I performed the song at several public venues over the years, and although Don gave me updated lyrics, I realized now that I never really learned the exact melody.

The current version of the song, recorded in 2009, includes Michael Francis doing a superb job on violin.

When Don told me this was his favorite version of Willowy Blonde, I asked him for permission to include it on this album. He generously agreed and I'm most grateful for this.

In a now abandoned effort to teach me the right melody, Don sent me an acapella version of the first verse, which became the introduction for this recording.

lyrics

Willowy Blond
© 1984 Don Taylor

The wind chimes are playing, a northerly tune
Out there in the full, of a midwinter moon
Well I've had my moments, and with me they stay
Old age and cold weather, won't drive them away
Old age and cold weather, won't drive them away

I have loved the ladies, and this is God's truth
But I'm not the rounder, I was in my youth
Oh I have my memories, and yet none so fond
As those that I have, of a willowy blonde
As those that I have, of a willowy blonde

I have known green pastures, and I have known pain
Seasons of plenty, and times of no rain
And still the best moments, I can dwell upon
Are those that I shared, with my willowy blonde
Those that I shared, with my willowy blonde

One day we awoke, and I wasn't the one
Sometimes life is funny, without being fun
When lily pads blossom, on a Sweetwater pond
It puts me in mind, of my willowy blonde
It puts me in mind, of my willowy blonde

At last when my lamps, have all run out of oil
When I'm ready to shuffle, off this mortal coil
I doubt even then, I could shake off the bond
That binds me so fast, to my willowy blonde
That binds me so fast, to my willowy blonde
