about

Stranded at the Strand is one of the finest examples of songwriting by my friend and former band mate Russell Clepper. I'm truly grateful for his permission to include the song in this collection.

Take the L train, or the N train
Take the A train or the sea
There ain’t no train, can take me
To some place, that I want to be
Can’t get out of New York City
Got no money for the fair, and I
Owe my next, four paychecks to some
Man, getting in my hair

Some blacktop tar secretion must be
Oozing through my glands
Makes my wandering feet stick to this street
Makes money slide through my hands
Well I should be out there rolling down
The road to strange new lands
But I ain’t going, anywhere
No I’m stranded, at the Strand

I can’t go out, to no restaurants
I get by, on rice and red beans
And I’ve got me some, diaper pins to mend up
The holes in my old blue jeans
Ain’t never been to see no plays down on Broadway
Cause the price is just too steep, and when those
Bowery bums, they see me come, they just
Drop their cups, and weep

Said some blacktop tar secretion must be
Oozing through my glands
Makes my wandering feet stick to this street
Makes money slide through my hands
Well I should be out there rolling down
The road to strange new lands
Oh, but I ain’t going, anywhere
No I’m stranded, at the Strand

Have you ever, been so lonely every
Word, you say sounds like goodbye?
When even seasons, leave you stranded cast
Away, and wondering why
Why should I ever, leave New York City
Ten million people choose to live there, besides
I, owe my next, four paychecks to some
Man, who’s sneaking up my stairs

So take the L train, or the N train
Take the A train or the sea
There ain’t no train, can take me
To some place, that I would rather be
Guess I’ll never see no plays down on Broadway
Cause their asking way to dear, and when those
Bowery bums, they see me come, they just
Drop their cups, and cheer

Some blacktop tar secretion must be
Oozing through my glands
Makes my wandering feet stick to this street
Makes money slide through my hands
Well I should be out there rolling down
The road to strange new lands
But I ain’t going, anywhere
No I’m stranded, at the Strand
