Silk Road Blues was written as a tribute to my friend, and Detroit folk-blues legend, Carl Henry. We were recording some of his songs at my home studio in Canton, MI, and I thought the music would be a great foundation for Carl's slide guitar work. Carl's project got sidelined and we never got any tracking done on this tune, so I wrote lyrics for the song after moving back to Texas in 2018. Our mutual friend Larry Everhart laid an excellent harmonica track down on this version.
From the Mississippi Delta, to the Piedmont Stop n' Go
The blues has been there with me, like nothing else I know
The tell me there's no reason and the tell me there's no rhyme
But the blues is just a feeling, that comes and goes with time
As long as I keep moving, I've got to pay my dues
No matter where I travel, I've got the Silk Road Blues
From the streets of Detroit City, to the shores of Manitou
I'm a man who minds my business, I expect the same from you
Those crooked politicians, want to take me for a ride
I'll never let them tell me, what is true and what's a lie
Slipping and sliding, on these pot-holed streets my friend
I find that I’m still driving, down the Silk Road Blues again
The Silk Road Blues are threadbare; some say I'm past my prime
But I can still deliver, anyway it’s not a crime
To be a man, to take a stand, and care for others too
So I'll just play the blues, until my time is through
As long as I keep moving, I've got to pay my dues
And no matter where I travel, I've got the Silk Road Blues
