Hailstorm started out as an instrumental piece. It was written and recorded during a sever summer thunderstorm in Southeast Michigan. It reflected the chaos and tension going on in the lives of several loved ones at the time.
I was collaborating with Detroit poet and musician, John Freeman then, and one afternoon, we sat down to work on some lyrics I'd come up with for the music. In a brief session, John provided some fresh ideas for a new narrative, which I fleshed out by setting the story in Galveston.
In 2019, when we were overdubbing tracks in his Austin studio, Jimmy George urged musician and friend, Mo Pair, to add authentic Indian drumming and chant to the song. This provided an expanded Southwest theme to it.
One fine summer’s day, on the Gulf Highway
The sky turned green and black, against Galveston Bay
Down here at the depot, people come and go
But none of them are you, dressed in green and blue
In a hailstorm
On the Strand I’ll be, or down on Market Street
Sipping jasmine tea, with socialites I meet
Now streets are filled with snow, my house is pale and cold
Since you took that Greyhound home, leaving me to roam
In a hailstorm
The bittersweet refrain, of a distant train
Is calling out your name, in an unrelenting rain
There’s no one left to blame, for things I can’t explain
Just a memory that remains, putting out a flame
In a hailstorm
In a hailstorm
In a hailstorm
